Red Square Russian was devised and written by Stephen Rich.

Stephen read Russian at Durham University and graduated in 2004. After a brief career in commodities trading, which involved time in China, Finland and Yorkshire, he decided to become a teacher and started a PGCE at Nottingham University in 2008. He has taught Russian and French at Winchester College since 2009. He has been both Head of Russian and Head of Modern Languages, and from September 2018 starts a new chapter as Housemaster. He has worked as an examiner for both Edexcel GCSE Russian and Cambridge Pre-U Russian.

‘I started writing the first book in the academic year 2016-17 because I felt my GCSE pupils were losing out from the lack of a decent textbook to accompany their studies,’ he writes. ‘Textbooks lack the glamour of apps or websites for language learning, but they are such a helpful tool for both learners and teachers. The former can see where they are going and what they are already supposed to know, whilst the latter have a structure to fall back on and lots of exercises to exploit. The teacher who has a textbook to use in his or her teaching can concentrate on enriching learning with other materials, without having to write grammar drills and the like. I am delighted to make Red Square Russian and my other materials available for purchase through this website.’
